Outsourcing – New Trends point to India

In the past week, a couple of new events emerged, which should have some positive impact on the India based Outsourcing Industry.

  1. Thomas Friedman’s article about “The Dawn of E2K  in India” in which he eloquently outlines a potential outsourcing industry/business area in the making – programming, managing and monitoring environmental initiatives for companies and countries as the sceptre of Climate Change grips us all in the coming years and decades
  2. The story of the successful surgery on a 8 limbed girl  in Bangalore to get her to have a normal life, while heart warming, also showcased the fantastic talents and capabilities in the medical field in India. This could, should have  positive impact on the Medical Tourism Outsourcing area in India – which has had some success, but has not yet made it to the mainstream.

We are sure to hear more on both fronts in the days and months to come

Outsourcing Legal Services to India

For some time now – a couple of years or so, we have seen growth in legal services offshoring to India. It is still a long way from being a mainstream activity for the Indian BPO/ITES industry – but it seems to be getting there.

An Bloomberg News/International Herald Tribune article titled “US firms outsource legal services to India” by Cynthia Cotts and Liane Kufchock, lays out the details. Here is an excerpt for you to decide if you want to read further….

NEW YORK: Bruce Masterson, the chief operating officer of Socrates Media, asked his outside counsel to customize a residential lease for all 50 U.S. states in 2003. About $400,000 was the firm’s estimate. He rejected that cost and hired QuisLex, a firm in Hyderabad, India, that did the work for $45,000.

“It was good quality,” said Masterson, whose company, which is based in Chicago, publishes legal forms on the Internet. “We’ve been working together ever since.”

Clients are pushing law firms like Jones Day and Kirkland & Ellis to send basic legal tasks to India, where lawyers tag documents and investigate takeover targets for as little as $20 an hour. The firms are part of a trend that will move about 50,000 U.S. legal jobs overseas by 2015, according to Forrester Research in Boston.

“The objective is to have only the most valuable people in London or New York, and the others in India, China or Columbus, Ohio,” said Robert Profusek, co-head of the mergers and acquisitions practice at Jones Day in New York.

Profusek sends low-end work to the cheapest locations and plans to open a document center in India.
